What is Piling?

on Wednesday, 24 September 2025.

WHAT IS PILING?

Piling is a foundation technique that transfers the load of a structure into deeper, stronger ground layers. Instead of relying only on surface soil, long slender piles made from steel, concrete, or timber are driven or drilled into the ground until they reach load-bearing strata or rock.

The result is a stable base for homes, commercial buildings, bridges, and more.

HOW DOES PILING WORK?

1. Site assessment
Soil investigation, load requirements, access, and environmental constraints are assessed.

2. Rig selection
A drop hammer, CFA, rotary, or mini piling rig is chosen to suit the ground conditions and available headroom.

3. Installation
Piles are driven or drilled to depth using specialist tooling.

4. Load transfer
Structural loads are carried into dense ground layers or rock to control settlement.

Tip: On tight sites, compact rigs with variable masts keep productivity high without exceeding headroom limits.

PILING IN PRACTICE: HOW WE HELP

We support projects of all sizes with:

  • Flexible rig hire (from one week to twelve months)

  • UK-built compact rigs for restricted-access sites

  • In-house workshop services for tooling and fabrication

  • Operator training for safe, efficient setup

COMMON PILING METHODS

Driven Piles (Drop Hammer)

Piles are hammered into the ground using a rig such as the Cobra D500/D1000. This proven, straightforward approach works across many ground types and is valued for speed and simplicity.

CFA (Continuous Flight Auger) Piles

A hollow-stem auger drills to depth. Concrete is pumped through the stem as the auger is withdrawn, forming a continuous pile without leaving an open hole. Ideal for low-noise, low-vibration urban work.

Rotary Bored Piles

Large-diameter piles drilled with high-torque rotary rigs. Best suited for dense strata, obstructions, and major infrastructure projects.

Mini Piling

Smaller rigs install piles in restricted-access or low-headroom locations such as basements, rail corridors, and city infills. Our UK-built Cobra range is engineered specifically for these conditions.

WHY PILING MATTERS

  • Provides stability on weak or variable soils

  • Delivers predictable performance with reduced settlement

  • Offers urban-friendly options with lower noise and vibration (e.g. CFA)

  • Enables restricted-access and low-headroom projects using compact rigs

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Piling = deep foundations using driven or drilled piles

  • Choose the method to match ground conditions: driven, CFA, rotary, or mini piling

  • Compact, UK-built Cobra rigs excel on restricted-access sites
